Do you love bikes? Do you have strong mechanical skills and want to put them to use for a good cause?

Silicon Valley Bicycle Exchange (SVBE) is hiring for a Shop Mechanic to join our staff team!

About the Role

As a key member of our small but mighty crew, you’ll handle a wide range of bicycle repair and maintenance work — from routine tune-ups to advanced service tasks like brake bleeds and suspension overhauls. You’ll work hands-on with bikes of every kind and era, from vintage road bikes to modern mountain machines, helping to bring each one back to life for the community.

Beyond wrenching, you’ll also share your knowledge and enthusiasm with our amazing volunteers, supporting our mission to make cycling more accessible while keeping bikes out of the landfill.

What You’ll Do

  • Perform high-quality repairs in line with SVBE quality control standards
  • Communicate with customers about repair status and service recommendations
  • Maintain a clean, safe and organized workbench and tool area
  • Follow all SVBE safety procedures and environmental practices
  • Collaborate with staff and volunteers to manage shop workflow and inventory
  • Contribute to a positive, educational and inclusive shop environment

What We’re Looking For

  • Strong mechanical aptitude and problem-solving skills
  • Experience with a wide range of bicycle components and compatibility standards
  • Attention to detail and ability to work independently
  • Great communication and teamwork skills
  • Physical ability to lift and maneuver bicycles safely
  • Familiarity with vintage bikes and parts is a plus (but not required)
  • A commitment to honesty, safety and community impact

What We Offer

  • Pay: $25–$35 per hour, based on experience
  • Benefits: Retirement fund matching, employee discount, paid holidays, paid time off, sick leave, health care stipend, cell phone plan subsidy.
  • Meaningful Work: Every bike you fix helps someone in need
  • Growth Opportunities: As SVBE expands its shop and programs, you’ll have room to grow with us
  • Flexible Hours: Full-time preferred, part-time available

Join Our Bike-Loving Community

At SVBE, you’ll be part of a nonprofit that believes bikes change lives. You’ll get to do what you love — fixing and riding bikes — while helping others experience that same joy.
Ready to join our bike-loving family? We can't wait to meet you!
